• Aloha Joe, I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend! We had a new little addition arrive to the OBRHI and DHHRE family this week! Our very own Jenny Kono, operational manager, had a baby girl named Everly Jane DeJesus. We would like to send our congratulations to Jenny and all the new mommies to be! 5TH ANNUAL GABBY PAHINUI WAIMANALO KANIKAPILA

• Aloha Joe as you can tell Family is very important to the Hawaiian people. And having fun together as a family is the best part of being in the islands!
• To celebrate the importance of family and culture the 5th annual Gabby Pahinui Waimanalo Kanikapila will happen on 

Saturday, August 11, 2012 at Waimanalo Beach Park from 9am to 6pm.
• Kanikapila is a style of Hawaiian music produced in an impromptu jam. The term comes from kani which means sound and pila which means any string.
• The event is free and open to the public and includes food, arts and crafts, educational booths and starring more than 150 icons of Hawaiian music and dance, as well as workshops in slack-key, ukulele, and steel guitar.
• During the early 80’s, Kanikapila sessions were founded at “Pop’s”, Gabby Pahinui’s namesake Waimanalo Park Pavilion, to feature and perpetuate Gabby’s Hawaiian style of kihoalu-slack key music.

It has long been the dream of the Pahinui Ohana (family) to recognize Gabby’s contribution and acknowledge Waimanalo as a focal point of Kihoalu and Hawaiian music by reestablishing these musical gatherings and their ability to perpetuate, and preserve the uniqueness of Hawaii’s musical identity.

Hawaii is synonymous with the sport of surfing, and there are literally hundreds of prime surf spots* for you to choose from ranging from the small beginner waves of Waikiki to the North Shore’s epic and often times dangerous surf breaks during the Winter months. So grab a board and some wax because the surf’s up on Oahu! Below is our list of Oahu’s best surf spots:

*Always remember: “When in doubt, don’t go out”. Certain surf spots have shallow reefs and strong currents, be sure to always check the warning signs and surf forecast before venturing out in the water.

Waikiki Canoes

Located off the iconic shores of Waikiki Beach, Canoes is probably the most popular of Oahu’s best surf spots for beginners. Unlike many of the other surf breaks on the island, the reef here is relatively worn down and makes for a nice rolling wave, perfect for long boarding. There are also multiple rentals and surf lessons in the area to choose from as well.

Quick Look

• Ability: Beginner
• Access: From the Duke Kahanamoku Statue towards the end of Waikiki, paddle out towards the 1:00 position
• Crowd: Crowded, but the local crowd here is usually mellow, stay on the inside and you will have no problems*
• Bottom: Primarily sandy bottom, the reef here is relatively worn down and smooth
• Board: Long Board
• Ability: Beginner

*Pay attention to your location: The break at Queens is to the right of Canoes (when looking towards the shore), and the local crowd there may be a bit hostile if you get in their way.

Ala Moana Courts

The surf break at Courts is located towards the center of Ala Moana Beach and, like many of Oahu’s best surf spots, requires a bit of a paddle. On larger days, where the rest of Ala Moana closes out, Courts just gets better with long, leaning rights. Waves range from waist high to overhead faces, and the slower sloping wave is ideal for beginners. On the inside is Baby Courts, which is a safer alternative for beginners with smaller wave heights and smaller crowds on big days.

Quick Look

• Ability: Beginner to Intermediate
• Access: Paddle straight out from the tennis courts at Ala Moana Beach Park. An alternate route would be to climb down the rocks from Magic Island side and paddle out from there, be sure to watch out for dry reef
• Crowd: Less crowded than Waikiki, but can get up to 25+ people on a good day. Once again, remember to practice proper surfing etiquette* and avoid “dropping in” or getting in the more experienced surfers’ way
• Bottom: Reefy, but the water is fairly deep, so you shouldn’t have to worry too much about running into it
• Board: Long Board

Diamond Head Cliffs

Depending on the time of year, the surf breaks at Diamond Head Cliffs (located below the iconic Diamond Head Crater) can range from ankle high to overhead faces. Weather is a factor, windy days can leave the ocean extremely choppy and the current can take a toll on inexperienced surfers. With that being said, Diamond Head often gets the best waves during south swells and is great for almost all skill levels.

Quick Look

• Ability: Dependent on size, but recommended for intermediate to advanced surfers on larger days
• Access: Park at the Diamond Head Lighthouse lookout. It’s a long walk down the side of Diamond Head and an even longer paddle out to the waves.
• Crowd: A mix of transplant college students, locals, and nearby residents. Once again, remember to practice proper surfing etiquette
• Bottom: Reefy. Keep a look out for submerged reef and try your best to avoid it when on a wave. During low tide, use shallow strokes to paddle out to avoid getting cut on the reef
• Board: Short and Long Boards

Turtle Bay

Located on the left side of the Turtle Bay Resort, this is our recommendedation for those looking to surf the North Shore. The spot is relatively empty and there is ample guest parking at the hotel. With wave heights averaging 3-5 ft with occasional overhead sets on big days, minimal rocks, and Turtle Bay is perfect for intermediate and experienced surfers.

Quick Look

• Ability: Intermediate to experienced surfers*
• Access: On the left side of the Turtle Bay Hotel. You will need to get a beach pass from the front booth.
• Crowd: A few tourists and locals
• Bottom: Flat rocks with sand
• Board: Short Board

*Once again, be sure to check the ocean conditions and remember “When in doubt, don’t go out”

Sunset Beach North Shore

One of the more popular and famous surf spots on the North Shore, Sunset Beach offers epic surf during the winter months, and is home to contests such as the Van’s Triple Crown of Surf Competition. Sunset Beach (like its famous neighbors Banzai Pipeline and Waimea Bay) is for the experienced surfer only. There are smaller days, but the breaks average from 3-5 ft faces with waves reaching up to 12+ ft on larger days. Like most surf spots in the North Shore there are sharp rocks and strong undertows to look out for, so be smart and exercise caution if you do decide to venture into the water.

• Ability: Experienced Surfers Only
• Access: Sunset Beach Park
• Crowd: Large crowds of local and professional surfers. Go out only if you are a strong swimmer and experienced surfer. Respect fellow surfers and remember to practice proper surfing etiquette
• Bottom: Sand with rough reef bottom
• Board: Short Board

42^ND ANNUAL UKULELE FESTIVAL

• Aloha Joe as you know music is also very important to the Hawaiian people and nothing is more reminiscent of the culture and the islands than the sound of the ukulele.

• Which is why on July 22 from 9am to 2pm we are celebrating our favorite local instrument!
• The annual Ukulele Festival at Kapiolani Park Bandstand in Waikiki is now a summer tradition in Hawaii! It has grown internationally and is by far the largest ukulele festival of its kind in the world, with crowds of thousands, guest artists from around the world and an ukulele orchestra of over 800 students, mostly children.
• 

Grammy Award-winning national pop artist James Ingram has been a frequent guest at the ukulele festival since 1994 when he and Roy met by chance while exercising on the tracks of the University of Hawaii.
• James Ingram, who has 7 children of his own, was so taken by the concept of the Ukulele Festival whose main stars are the 800 children that now the event has grown to host ukulele virtuosos, internationally known musicians, local celebrities and talented ukulele players from around the world as well as a ukulele orchestra of over 800 students. SPAM JAM FESTIVAL

• Aloha Joe, each place in the world seems to have its signature food festival. You may have heard about tomatoes, ribs, onions or pumpkins, but you have never seen anything like this! 

• It’s the annual WAIKIKI SPAM JAM Festival this Saturday April 28! The WAIKIKI SPAM JAM Festival, which starts at 4:00 p.m. and ends at 10:00 p.m., is quickly becoming one of the most popular festivals in Hawaii because of its great food and entertainment in a family-friendly atmosphere.


• Local residents and visitors alike have made this an annual tradition. Kalakaua Avenue is closed to car traffic for the event, and two entertainment stages and a variety of Hawaiian crafters are set up on the street.

CINCO DE MAYO CELEBRATION

• Aloha Joe it’s almost time for our favorite Spanish holiday of the year!
• On Saturday, May 5, 2012 from 6:00pm to 10:00pm, at the intersection of Hotel Street and Nuuanu Avenue, the Arts District Merchants Association will present the annual “Cinco de Mayo Hispanic Celebration” Street Festival! 
• This year’s celebration serves to bring awareness to Oahu’s diverse population of 120,000 Hispanics from over 22 nations. It is co-produced by the HA PA: the Arts at Marks Garage.
• The Cinco de Mayo Street Festival specifically highlights Honolulu’s connection to all the beautiful colors, dances, arts, music, folklore and cuisine of Latin America.
• Local Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Cuban restaurants will feature seasonal specialties, alongside downtown landmark establishments and the best of Honolulu lunch-wagon eateries. Expect Nachos, spicy Chili Con Queso, Tamales and Horchata, Elotes and Pasteles, alongside Chicken Mole and Green Rice, Mexican Pizza, Lamb & Chicken Biryani, French crepes, Cheesecake…

History

The sport of surfing, is deeply rooted in centuries of Hawaiian legend and culture. In Old Hawaii, the art of Surfing was both spiritual and physical in nature. Surf spots were named after legendary surfing events, with some being reserved specifically for the Ali’i (Hawaiian Royalty) to showcase their athletic abilities in the water.  Kahuna ( village wise men/witch doctors) would recite special chants to bless the new surfboard, bringing courage and strength to those who challenged the big waves. Shortly after the arrival of Captain Cooke and the subsequent Westernization of Hawaii in 1778, however, the art and religion associated with surfing soon declined and all but disappeared for nearly 120 years.

It wasn’t until the 20th century, that Hawaii and America rediscovered the lost art of surfing. With the help of acclaimed author Jack London’s book “A Royal Sport – Surfing In Waikiki”, colleague and surfing enthusiast Alexander Hume Ford began petitioning the trustees of the Queen Emma Estate to reserve a plot of land next to Waikiki’s Moana Hotel for a club that would preserve the ancient Hawaiian art of surfing and outrigger canoeing. Accepted on May 1, 1908 the Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Club was founded and a new era of surfing in Waikiki began.

Duke Kahanamoku

While Hawaii was experiencing it’s surfing renaissance, California was also experiencing a new found interest in surfing thanks in part to avid Hawaiian surfers George Freeth and Duke Paoa Kahanamoku. Despite the fact that George Freeth is credited as the “first man to surf California”, it was the Olympic gold medal winning waterman Duke Kahanamoku, who is credited as “the father of modern surfing”. Kahanamoku sensationalized the sport of surfing in ways that Feeth never could, with his demonstrations at Corona del Mar and Santa Monica Beach. His athleticism and exotic looks soon catapulted him to Hollywood stardom, and with it came an even larger platform on which he could introduce and share his love for the sport of surfing to the world.

Surfing Today

Today, the sport of surfing is a far cry from the days of ancient Hawaii. The sport of kings, with its ceremonial chants and heavy wooden surfboards have been replaced by global surf brands and lighter, smaller plexiglass covered foam core boards. Now an international sport, surf contests, stores and expos dominate Hawaii’s once small surf culture. With so many options of bards to choose from and with South Swells in the Summer and North Swells in the Winter, avid surfers would be hard pressed not to be in the water. But in spite of all the changes and commercialism found in todays surfing subculture, the rush of adrenaline when catching a wave followed by that spiritual calm of just being in the ocean is as timeless as Hawaii itself and is one thing that will never change.

In America, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance, a time to honor those who have given their lives in service to their country. In Hawaii, the strong Asian/Buddhist tradition of honoring the dead brings a new and very profound meaning to Memorial Day. Family and friends from across the state spend the day together at their loved one’s gravesides, placing everything from flowers to gifts (cans of beer, tangerines and teddybears) to commemorate those who served their country and all others who have passed away. It is a day, not only spent in remembrance but also in communion; a time spent coming together as family, enjoying the company of those closest to you.

In Japan, Toro Nagashi, or “lantern offerings on the water” is a time-honored Buddhist ceremony which commemorates the lives of ancestors and loved ones, offering comfort and guidance to the spirits of the deceased. Traditionally practiced on the last evening of the Obon Festival (Festival Of The Dead), the candle-lit lanterns carry the heartfelt prayers for the loved ones who have passed.

Officiated by the Buddhist Order of Shinnyo-en, the first Memorial Day Toro Nagashi, or Lantern Floating Ceremony, took place at Ke’ehi Lagoon on Oahu’s south shore in 1999. In 2002, the ceremony was moved to the Magic Island side of Ala Moana Beach Park where it has been observed every year since.

Today, over 40,000 Hawaii residents and visitors gather to write their remembrances and prayers onto the paper lanterns that will be floated out to sea during the ceremony. Community volunteers and local canoe clubs help with the task of casting off the thousands of lanterns, both from the shore and on the open water. The Lantern Floating Ceremony brings a close to Memorial Day in Hawaii in a culmination of thoughts and prayers of all who have loved and lost; a moment in which warmth and peace transcends all human divisions of who we are or what we believe, a moment in which the people of Hawaii are truly united as one.

Prayer requests and remembrances can be made and written on special lantern paper starting at 10:00 AM on Memorial Day, at the Lantern Tent in Ala Moana Beach Park, and continuing until 5:30 PM. The Lantern Ceremony begins at 6:00 PM and will be broadcast live on KGMB9 with live streaming via lanternfloatinghawaii.com, the ceremony will also be rebroadcasted to other viewers in Asia, Europe, Australia, as well as North and South America at later dates. Regardless if you have recently experienced a loss or who would simply like to remember, the Annual Memorial Day Lantern Floating Ceremony at Ala Moana Beach is truly an event you don’t want to miss.

HONOLULU SYMPHONY INTRODUCES POP SEASON

• Aloha Joe as you know when most people think of classical music the words fun and pop don’t exactly come to mind! But leave it to no better place than Hawaii to start mixing things up!

• The new Hawai’i Symphony Orchestra announced a six-concert “Pops Series” this week, bringing back Matt Catingub to conduct and lead the orchestra as it accompanies top local and mainland stars in jazz, rock and Hawaiian tunes.
• The first concert, on April 18 at Blaisdell Concert Hall, features Raiatea, Henry Kapono and Na Leo Pilimehana, all of whom performed with the Honolulu Symphony.
• Catingub, the multitalented musician who founded the Honolulu Symphony’s lauded Pops Series in 1998, went on to establish a pops orchestra in Southern California and lead a pop series in New Mexico. He’s also created award-winning recordings and film scores.
• He expects to be very busy launching the new season on such short notice, with six concerts scheduled until July 4. All will be at Blaisdell or the Waikiki Shell.

History

The Bishop Museum was founded in 1889 by Charles Reed Bishop to house the extensive collection of Hawaiian artifacts and royal family heirlooms of his late wife, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last descendant of the royal Kamehameha family. Over the years, the Bishop Museum’s collection has grown to include millions of artifacts, documents and photographs from Hawaii and other Pacific Island cultures. Located on the grounds of the original Kamehameha School for Boys, the Museum’s grand Polynesian and Hawaiian Halls shared the school’s Kapalama campus until 1940, when the school moved to its now permanent location in Kapalama Heights.

Today, the Bishop Museum is the largest museum in the State of Hawaii and the premier natural and cultural history institution in the Pacific. Home to one of the largest natural history specimen collections in the world, the museum is recognized for its cultural collections, research projects, consulting services and public educational programs serving and representing the interests of Native Hawaiians.

DALAI LAMA COMES TO HONOLULU

MAUKA TO MAKAI CLEAN WATER EXPO

History

The Waikiki Aquarium, founded in 1904, stands as the third oldest public aquarium in the United States. Created by the Honolulu Rapid Transit Authority in hopes to boost traffic to Kapi’olani Park, the Aquarium was built on lands donated by James B. Castle with funding from Charles and Anna Cooke.

Today, the Waikiki Aquarium is home to over 464 species of marine plants and animals. Designated a Coastal Ecosystem Learning Center of the Coastal America Partnership federal program, the aquarium serves to increase public awareness of the ecology and conservation of marine life and reef habitats through aquarium exhibits, research and education. With new exhibitions and renovations underway, the Waikiki Aquarium is a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in Hawaii’s unique marine ecosystem.

History

The Honolulu Zoo was first established in 1876, when King David Kalakaua, Hawaii’s “Merrie Monarch”, took the royal lands near the slopes of Diamond Head and made them available for a grand public park for the people of Hawaii. The following year, Kapi’olani Park was officially opened in honor of Queen Esther Kapi’olani. The park was home to King Kalakaua’s personal collection of exotic birds and horses, which continued to grow over the years to include monkeys, lion cubs, and the zoo’s first elephant, named Daisy.

Today, the Honolulu Zoo has grown to become the largest zoo within a radius of 2,300 miles and is the only zoo in the United States to be established through grants made by a sovereign monarch. Offering a wide range of activities and exhibits for the entire family, including a children’s zoo, picnicking areas, playgrounds and wide open spaces for children to play in, the Honolulu Zoo is perfect for a family day spent in Paradise.

Diamond Head

Today, Diamond Head is a popular mile long hike along a switchback trail, through old war bunkers and steep winding staircases to the top of the crater where a breathtaking 360 degree view  of Oahu awaits you.

The Makapu’u Lighthouse trail is a leisurely South East Shore hike with magnificent views ow the windward coast of Oahu along with glimpses of Moloka’i, Lanai and even Maui on extremely clear days. A paved road leads visitors up to the historic Makapu’u Lighthouse (built in 1909). The scenic lookouts along the hike are great for spotting humpback whales during the winter months.

PAN-PACIFIC FESTIVAL 2012

• Aloha Joe as you know in the late 1970’s the number of travelers from Japan to Hawaii dramatically increased. A small group of people wanted to ensure that the increased interaction between these two cultures would be both enjoyable and educational!
• Thus, the very first Matsuri in Hawaii was born in 1980. The word “MATSURI” is a Japanese word meaning “FESTIVAL.” Matsuri in Hawaii was envisioned as a means to enrich the lives of both participating artists and audiences, including Hawaii residents and other travelers visiting Hawaii, with a rewarding and participatory exposure to traditional Japanese culture.
• Matsuri in Hawaii allowed visiting participants from Japan to share their music, crafts, traditions, and foods with others in the beautiful setting of world-famous Waikiki, while Hawaii residents and other Hawaii visitors gained a deeper appreciation of Japanese sensibilities and cultural heritage. By highlighting traditional folk music and age-old arts and crafts and bringing internationally respected performers to Hawaii, Matsuri has served Japan as a sort of cultural goodwill ambassador, introducing the people of Hawaii and its many visitors to the richness of the Japanese culture.

THE SHINS & JIMMY CLIFF

• Aloha Joe as you know in most cities across the country, concert season coincides with summer — college students are on vacation and daylight lingers a little longer, providing the perfect components for music festivals and band tours!
• Here in Hawaii, there seems to have been an influx of national acts in recent years, fueled by an increase in the number of promoters getting into the concert business.
• More artists are including Asia in their touring plans, too, making a stop in Honolulu a viable option! As well as the sudden surge in electronica music, the return to good old rock and roll and the comeback of the music legend greats!
• One such show has got all of Oahu excited! The Shins perform at the Blaisdell Concert Hall on Tuesday, April 17th. The indie rock band has been on a roll recently with performances on “Saturday Night Live” and “Late Night with David Letterman,” and at festivals like South By Southwest and the upcoming Coachella Music Festival.
• The following night on April 18, Jimmy Cliff takes the stage at the Waterfront at Aloha Tower. It’s been a while since he performed in Honolulu, so reggae fans are sure to flock to this concert. With tons of hits under his belt, Jimmy is sure to put on an awesome outdoor show.

Hula: An Oral Tradition

In ancient Hawaii, in the days of no written language, Hawaiians would pass on their culture and history through hula (a mixture of song, chant and dance). Up until 1820, the year the Protestant Missionaries began arriving to the islands, the hula was the Hawaiian’s vessel for passing on their culture, history, stories and spirituality.

The introduction of Christianity and its consequential conversion of the Ali’i (Hawaiian for royalty or nobility) resulted in the denouncement and prohibition of the “pagan ritual” of hula (with the exception of licensed public performances) in Hawaii. It wasn’t until  the reign of King David Kalakaua (1874-1891), that Hawaii began to see a resurgence of its traditional arts. Under his reign, Hawaiians experienced a renaissance of the ancient, and now dying, culture of their ancestors within the foreign and modern influences that continued to change their world.

The Merrie Monarch Festival

Founded in 1964 by George Na’ope, the Merrie Monarch Festival honors the memory of King David Kalakaua (referred to as the “Merrie Monarch”) for his patronage of the arts. In 1968, Dorothy “Auntie Dottie” Thompson created the private Merrie Monarch Festival community organization and later added the competition in 1971. A second renaissance of the Hawaiian culture, what has now become an annual event, the Merrie Monarch Festival takes place in Hilo, Hawaii starting on Easter Sunday and continues throughout the week with cultural art exhibits and demonstrations, ending with the world famous Merrie Monarch hula competition.

Taking place at the Edith Kanaka’ole Multipurpose Stadium, the three day hula competition features the Miss Aloha Hula solo competition on Thursday and the Kahiko (ancient) and ‘Auana (modern) hula competitions on Friday and Saturday. Considered by many as the olympics of hula, hula hālaus (groups/schools) from around the world will work year round in preparation for the Festival. Through workshops and hula classes, students gain an intimate knowledge and appreciation for the harmony and balance between the ancient Hawaiians and the Islands that were their home.

Two divisions of groups, the kane (male) and wahine (female), compete in this prestigious competition, with each hālau allowed up to seven minutes on stage. Each performance is judged on four aspects of the performance: the ka’i (entrance), oli (chant), hula (dance) and the ho’i (exit). Maintaining strict standards of authenticity, the Merrie Monarch Festival perpetuates the true history and culture of the ancient Hawaiian people, in a modern world where the Hawaiian people face permanent extinction. Proceeds from the sold out hula competition and Festival go to support educational scholarships, workshops, seminars, symposiums and the preservation of the Festival.

A celebration of the rich cultural heritage of Hawaii, the Merrie Monarch Festival is definitely an event that you will never forget. This year marks the 49th anniversary of the Merrie Monarch Festival and takes place from April 8-14 in Hilo, Hawaii.

On a hot day in Hawaii, whether you are at the beach or outside working in the yard, nothing compares to the refreshing sweetness of Shave Ice. Matsumoto’s Grocery Store has been in business in the small town of Haleiwa since 1951. It wasn’t until they decided to include shave ice though, that the small family business exploded. When the surf/hippie culture hit North Shore in the 1960′s, Matsumoto Shave Ice’s popularity skyrocketed. Today, Matsumoto’s has not only maintained but continued to grown in its popularity and is now an Oahu landmark, as well as a North Shore staple. Almost exactly the same as it was over 60 years ago, you will be sure to find large crowds and one of the best shave ice on the island on any given day of the week.

If it weren’t for the large crowds and illegally parked cars, this small shop could easily be passed by without a second glance. But don’t let the run down storefront and location deceive you, Waiola’s shave ice is arguably THE finest on the island. With a smooth texture similar to a sorbet and even sometimes described as being “fluffy”, along with a wide assortment of homemade syrups, it is no wonder why Waiola is one of the most popular shave ice choices amongst Oahu’s locals. Interested?

Formerly known as B&B Store, Shimazu is an old shop with a new name. While on a main road, like Waiola Shave Ice, this one is hiding in plain view and may be a bit hard if not impossible to find. Considered by many locals as “the best shave ice on the island”, Shimazu’s Shave ice offers a wide variety of unique and dare we say “gourmet” flavors as well as finely shaved ice comparable to Waiola’s. The shop does get busy and crowded at times, even though there is a “No Loitering” policy, so be prepared to leave the vicinity immediately after getting your shave ice.

Jung Shave Ice

Out of the five Shave Ice Shops listed here, Jung Shave Ice is by far the least known and probably the most underrated. While it is located on the always busy S. King Street, minutes away from Waikiki, the fact that 90% of the storefront is covered in cardboard and newspaper clippings is probably a deterrent for most people. I know we said this about Waiola Shave Ice, but Jung Shave Ice is the epitome of a “hole in the wall”. Located across the street from Washington Middle School, the store is a hotspot for kids looking for cheap candy and shave ice that rivals both Shimazu and Waiola. Once again: Appearances can be deceiving, so don’t let the rundown exterior and crowded liquor store interior deter you from trying possibly one of the best shave ice in Honolulu.

• “Fluffy” shave ice (which may possibly even beat Waiola’s) served in cups rather than cones (which means more)
• About 40 homemade syrups
• Variety of extras such as vanilla ice cream, mochi balls, tapioca, azuki beans, condensed milk and chocolate syrup to name a few
• Also note that this is basically a one man operation, so the hours can fluctuate and you may have to wait a bit for service on busy days

Island Snow

We admit that, compared to the previous shave ice shops, Island Snow isn’t the greatest shave ice on the island, but it is one of the more famous, thanks to President Barack Obama. Down the road from world famous Kailua Beach and a quick drive from Obama’s Winter Whitehouse, Island Snow is a small surf shop located in the small town of Kailua. There is ample parking and benches outside for friends and family to relax after a long day at the beach. And while the shave ice syrups may not be as good as Shimazu’s or have ice shavings as fine as Waiola’s, just enjoying Kailua’s laid back atmosphere for a little while longer makes Island Snow well worth the stop.

Quick Look:

• The ice shavings here are not as fine as the rest mentioned, resulting in a slightly more “icy” shave ice
• Over 30 flavors including lilikoi, lychee, kona coffee and melona (honey dew melon)
• Extras include vanilla ice cream, azuki beans and a “snow cap” (condensed milk)
• And incase anyone’s wondering, Obama’s Presidential pick, or the “Snowbama”, is guava orange, cherry, and lemon-lime

Besides sun bathing, surfing and maybe shopping, the next thing that most people think of doing in Hawaii is snorkeling. While there are many areas to choose from, needless to say, some are just better than others. Here’s a quick rundown of the “better ones”:

Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay is hands down, the most popular snorkeling location on Oahu. While a fantastic tourist destination, due largely in part to it being in literally every single tourist publication from here to Japan, the crowds and quarter inch of sunscreen floating on the surface makes this slightly less than ideal. With that being said, this is still a very decent snorkeling destination; below the surface, there is still an abundance of friendly and even semi-domesticated fish along with ample amounts of beautiful coral reef to see. Also, in comparison to the  alternatives, Hanauma Bay is accessible all year round. The shallow waters along the shoreline are perfect for children and beginner snorkelers, while the outer reef offers the more experienced the chance to get a bit more space and adventure, exploring the more turbulent waters of “Witches Brew.” Park hours are 6 AM – 7 PM and we recommend be arriving early, as the parking lot tends to reach max capacity by 9 AM. Also note that the Bay is closed every Tuesday.

Sharks Cove

Located down the road from Waimea Bay on Oahu’s North Shore, Sharks Cove is basically free of the Waikiki tourist crowd (unlike the aforementioned Hanauma Bay). Part of Pupukea Beach Park, this small rocky bay offers crystal blue water and an impressive line up of aquatic ocean dwellers. Although not as family friendly as Hanauma Bay, the rocks surrounding the cove make for calm waters perfect for beginners and children. The edge of the cove offers snorkelers and free divers a chance to explore small caves and ledges for hidden marine life and coral. There is also the Pupukea tide pools on the south side of the Cove for families to wade and explore. Keep in mind that during the winter months, Sharks Cove is usually unavailable due to the North Shore’s Winter Swells. We recommend not even attempting to venture out during the months of October through April, but don’t let that stop you from checking out some of Hawaii’s most famous surf breaks. And keep in mind that with the North Shore’s growing popularity amongst tourists, parking may be hard to find so get there early.

Makaha Beach Park

Although this is highly recommended by many Oahu travel and snorkeling guides, Makaha Beach Park comes with a disclaimer: This beautiful beach, located on the West side of the island, will inevitably include the now infamous local homeless crowds along with the possibility of theft (leave all valuables at home). On the bright side, the beach is very popular amongst tourists and is located right next to the Makaha Plantation Resort. The waters are clear and calm during the Summer, but like Sharks Cove, the Winter months bring extremely large surf to the West Side. Unless you are an avid surfer, we suggest sticking with Hanauma Bay during the months of October through April. Below the surface are a number of natural arches and underwater caverns, along with a lava tube tunnel running forty feet deep for the experienced divers. Perfect for getting glimpses of monk seals, manta and eagle rays along with the occasional dolphin(s), you are sure to walk away with the snorkeling experience of  a lifetime.

It tells the story of two girls in Oz — one born with emerald green skin and the other beautiful and popular — who go on to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.
• » “Rain — A Tribute to the Beatles” will run from May 13-19, 2013. The multi-media concert includes a full range of Beatles music live on stage, including some that the group thought too challenging to perform outside a recording studio.
• » “Blue Man Group” will run from June 18-23, 2013. The group, which doesn’t speak during its performances, is known for shows that are wildly outrageous, theatrical and so exciting that they allegedly leave audiences euphoric. They also wear blue costumes.
