UNITED AIRLINES INCLUDES NON-STOP FLIGHT TO THE EAST COAST

Aloha Joe I don’t know if you heard the big news yet but UNITED Airlines has finally began their long anticipated direct flight non-stop flight from Honolulu to Washington D.C.
CALLING ALL EAST COASTERS, United Airlines is planning to begin daily service from Washington/ Dulles International Airport to Honolulu beginning June 7, 2012.
The flight will be the only nonstop service between the two destinations raising the number to three of regularly scheduled direct air connections between Hawaii and the East Coast. Snookie get your hula skirt ready!
Honolulu has always been a sought after destination for our east coast visitors and with the addition of the new Honolulu to DC flight it is just all the more easier to get to paradise!

THE SHINS

Aloha Joe I’ve been so excited about the mix of musical events and the range of well-known artists that have decided to make Paradise a part of their tour this year! It just keeps getting better and better!
On Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 8pm The Shins, an American indie rock band founded and fronted by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, James Mercer, will perform at the Blaisdel Concert Hall in Honolulu.
The Shins were formed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but are now based in Portland, Oregon and are on tour promoting their new album Port Of Morrow.
Regarded as one of the iconic bands of 2011 the Shins style is chic, simple, young and carefree, perfect for the charmingly sophisticated millennial generation! Even the old folks are getting down with the Shins!

Aloha Joe, like I said perfect weather for our favorite frequenters. Everyone has been so excited the last couple of weeks because the true Kama’ainas are finally back in town! I’m happy to report that it’s whale season in the islands!
As you know humpback whales migrate across thousands of miles from their feeding grounds in the cold waters of the north and south poles to their warm breeding waters near the equator, also known as HAWAII!
Each and every humpback whale is born in the islands making them our biggest locals and our favorite attractions.
Just about a week ago a couple of humpback whales were seen at the Aloha Tower harbor playing with the fishing boats that were making their way in. It was quite a sight!

OUTSTANDING IN THE FIELD ARRIVES IN HAWAII

Aloha Joe, new season means new food delicacies and boy oh boy do we have some delicious news in paradise!
California-based traveling farm dinner series “Outstanding in the Field” is in Hawaii this month to partner with local chefs on four special dinners on four different islands.
Founded by chef Jim Denevan in 1999, “Outstanding in the Field” dinners have been held all over the mainland with the goal being to “reconnect diners to the land and the origins of their food, and introduce them to the local farmers and food artisans whose good work brings nourishment to the table.
The first dinner was held Saturday, Jan. 14, on Kauai at Olana Organic Farm in Kilauea with guest chef Aaron Leikam (formerly of 22 North).
Next Saturday, Jan. 21, is the Oahu stop for “Outstanding in the Field.” After recently hosting First Lady Michelle Obama at MA’O farms in Waianae, town executive chef Ed Kenney will return to share his expertise with diners. The four-island tour will wrap up on Hawaii Island on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Kekala Farms in Waimea with Village Burger’s chef Edwin Goto — a first for “Outstanding in the Field,” which has never paired up with a “burger shack” before.
Each of the Hawaii events will start at 3 p.m. with wine and pupu, followed by a tour of the host farm. Each four-course dinner will be served family-style and paired with wines. Tickets are $190 per person (includes tax and tip). To reserve a seat, visit www.outstandinginthefield.com.

DHHRE’s 2011 Residential Housing Market Year in Review

HONOLULU, HI — JANUARY 12, 2012 — On the Island of Oahu, single family home sales dropped 2.7 percent down to 2,974 units sold, while condominiums showed positive signals with sales up by 4.3 percent to 4,029 units sold in 2011; published by the Honolulu Board of Realtors’ Year to Date Report and December Monthly Indicators.

Warren Daniel, CEO, Distinctive Homes Hawaii Real Estate, LLC., commented that “though the latter part of 2011 showed modest signs of an upward trend in the Oahu residential housing market, in sum, the market has been relatively flat with very strong sales volume numbers.”

Historically, the housing sector is viewed as reliable source as to how property owners are responding to the economy in general, which in 2011 was stagnant across most major sectors. Hawaii homeowners were not sheltered from the banking and financial market woes. Single family median home prices dropped 3 percent from $593,000 to $575,000; while condominiums median price dipped by 1.6 percent from $305,000 to $300,000 in 2011.

As far as a pulse on inventory goes, new listings for single family homes dropped by 8.1 percent, with months of remaining inventory down 19.7 percent to close out 2011. Condominiums inventory was also down by 6.0 percent and a 23.2 percent reduction in months of remaining inventory.

“All indicators show that prime areas in Hawaii have been mostly immune from the foreclosure and short sale meltdown,” Mr. Warren said. As evident in final 2011 numbers which showed that the average sales price for single family homes dropped by less than a percent at 0.7. Condos also saw slightly lower average sales prices at 0.1 percent less than 2010 prices.

Overall, across the industry the outlook for 2012 is bright. Mr. Daniel pointed out that, “upward pricing pressure is expected this year with the decrease in inventory and the increase in the number of sales.”

Contestants were asked to guess the number of seashells in an Hawaiian glass fish vase. The secret official count was 825 shells.

The first prize winner was D. Whiting who guessed 824 on December 12th, off by a single shell. There was a statistical tie for second prize with two entries off by 17 shells. The tie-breaker came down to the date of entry. The second prize was awarded to G. Colon who guessed 808 shells on November 25th, and third prize went to B. Way who guessed 842 on December 8th. The winners were announced during the Aloha Joe radio show Thursday morning, January 5, 2012.

The first prize was a complimentary 5-Night stay for two at the Diamond Head Beach Hotel overlooking Waikiki, Hawaii. Second prize was a helicopter tour for two provided by Blue Hawaiian Helicopters and third prize was a gift certificate for two to Germaine’s Hawaiian Luau on Oahu.

TRADITIONAL NEW YEAR’S FOOD

Aloha Joe what better way to ring in the New Year than with a traditional Japanese New Year’s feast that is a major practice in Hawaii?

New Years is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Hawaii and the Japanese culture has a lot of influence over the food and culture. There are traditional New Year’s foods that are eaten to give strength, give good luck, good health and long life. One traditional food prepared at New Year’s time is mochi.

Mochi pounding is the biggest event of the New Year’s celebration in paradise. To pound mochi, sweet rice is soaked overnight then steamed until soft. Then the mochi is placed in the usu (big, deep bowl). One or two people pound the mochi while another person turns the mochi in the usu between the pounds and sprinkles some water on it. When the mochi is smooth, it is placed on a table and shaped into flat balls with one hand.

Ozoni (mochi soup) is made on New Year’s Eve and is eaten after midnight. It is believed to give strength throughout the upcoming year. Having a whole red fish is greatly believed to also bring you good luck.

And then washing it all down with a nice shot of warm sake definitely seals the deal! LOL!

So many traditions and cultural events in Hawaii helps make it such a special place that you can’t find anywhere else in the world!

Aloha Joe, we have been waiting all year for this special time and now that it’s here all of Oahu is in the Christmas spirit!

Christmas has long been a favorite in Hawaii dating all the way back to 1786 when Captain George Dixon, a long way from home, ordered a Christmas dinner and a bowl of punch prepared aboard the Charlotte vessel. A pig was brought from shore and roasted, the galley crew made pie and for this special occasion, the day’s ration of grog was mixed with coconut milk.

From the deck of the Charlotte in Waimea Bay in Kauai on December 25, 1786, Captain Dixon and his men toasted friends and family at home in England. It was Hawaii’s first Christmas.

Today during the entire month of December the state capitol is lit up with gorgeous ornaments of every shape and size celebrating the wonderment of Christmas. Santa himself sits front and center each night for picture taking with all of Oahu’s keiki. It is a tradition that still burns bright to this very day.

Aloha Joe the cat is out of the bag and boy does it sound like good news!

The former Chef of Apartment 3, Robert McGee, along with restauranteurs the Vertical Junkies, is opening the Whole Ox Deli in Kaka’ako at the beginning of next year.

I don’t know if you have ever had Oxtail soup but Hawaii is famous for it, and it sounds like Chef McGee is keeping with the tradition!

The Whole Ox Deli is planning on centering the restaurant on free roaming, fresh meat like pastrami, ham and a variety of other mouth-watering deli meats.

Chef McGee is known for making sure that his meat has been properly and humanely cared for with only natural animal feed and free of harmful chemical enhancements.

The new restaurant will be located on Keawe Street in Honolulu.

November Oahu Single Family Home Prices Up Slightly

The median price for Oahu single family homes median sales price for November 2011 was $58,000 up one percent from 2010; condo prices dropped by 5.5 percent at $295,000; according to the Honolulu Board of REALTORS analysis, using data collected from the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) system.

From our review of Novemeber stats there is a good indication that 2012 could be a more stable real estate market for Oahu. And even with bank loans drying up for middle income American, we’ve seen cash flow toward real estate investment and new ownership in the Waikiki and Honolulu areas.

STATS:

Single Family November 2011: 251 homes; $580,000

Single Family November 2010: 248 homes; +1.2% $574,500; +1.0%

Condos November 2011: 333 sales; $295,000

Condos November 2010: 316 + 5.4% $312,000; -5.4%

Median price means half the prices were above and half below the given price.

During November, sales of 251 single-family homes and 333 condominiums were reported through the Board’s MLS, increases of 1.2 percent and 5.4 percent, respectively, for single-family homes and condominiums from November 2010.

The median price paid for island properties in November was $580,000 for single-family homes and $295,000 for condominiums, an increase of 1 percent for single family homes and a decrease of 5.4 percent for condominiums compared to the same month last year.

HONOLULU MARATHON 2011

Aloha Joe it’s Race Week on Oahu and it’s beginning to look a lot like the Honolulu Marathon!

The tents are going up at Kapiolani Park, the Honolulu Marathon Expo opened on Wednesday, banners are flying around town, out-of-town runners and supporters are arriving and Marathon Association President Jim Barahal, his staff and hundreds of volunteers are gearing up for this Sunday’s race, which begins at 5 a.m. on Ala Moana Boulevard with fireworks, music and thousands of feet hitting the pavement.

A total of 20,972 runners have registered for the 39th annual race. A total of 20,168 finished last year’s race, making it the 10th largest marathon in the world.

This year’s field includes a pack of about two-dozen elite runners. Included are defending champions Nicholas Chelimo of Kenya and Belainesh Gebre of Ethiopia. It is an amazing spectacle of beauty and endurance that you can’t find anywhere else in the world!

Oahu condo sales has been on a steady upswing. October’s Monthly Indicators provided by the Honolulu Board of Realtors showed a 20.7 percent increase in pending sales at the same time a decrease by 20.2 percent in current inventories, and condo prices were up by 7.4 percent. However, as dramatic as these indicators might be, it is still buyers’ market.

Similarly, though less dramatic, the single-family market overview for October showed a decline of 17.6 percent on the inventory side and only 1.8 increase in pending sales; and a positive 8.7 percent swing in average sales price.

At the same time, this unique micro-climate on Oahu – there are only so many homes and so many condos in a fixed quantity at any given moment. The newest building in the Honolulu Waikiki area is the Trump International Hotel at Waikiki Beach Walk that opened two years ago November 2009. And though there are many proposed developments, we don’t expect much new properties to hit the market anytime soon.

So, even with the current less than positive economic situation, if all conditions remain the same, the single-family segment could start to turn to a sellers’ market in the near future.

We now anxiously await the November indicators. We expect no major surprises, rather a continuation of October 2011 trends. And if November trend on the same wavelength as October, we can look to 2012 as potentially a better year for property owners.

TRIPLE CROWN OF SURFING – 2^nd COMPETITION SUNSET BEACH

Aloha Joe, how many places are there where you can surf, swim and enjoy a variety of water activities in the middle of December? Well in paradise you sure can and right now Oahu has surfing fever!

After completing the first competition, the Reef Pro at Haleiwa Beach last weekend, this week we were able to move right along with the second event of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing at the one and only legendary Sunset Beach.

Participants were intense in their quest for the second jewel of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing World Cup title.

Professionals like Kelly Slater, Sunny Garcia and Gerry Lopez were on hand to dazzle fans with their unbelievable surfing ability and skill. Bikini models walked through the crowds handing out red bull and sunblock and photographers were creating a frenzy shooting all the non-stop action.

Surfers from 16 nations took part in the competition. The beaches were packed with spectators and media personal. It was quite the event! And don’t get me started on the weather! Blue skies and perfect rides! We will keep you posted on the winners and the final outcome of the Triple Crown World Cup of Surfing.

Toritos Mexican Restaurant owned by Edwin Portillo is located at the Market City Shopping Center just off Kapiolani Blvd and boy let me tell you, their food is unbelievable!

True authentic Mexican cooking at it’s finest. They have fajitas, huevos rancheros, carne asada, tacos, burritos, chiquitas, tamales, churros you name it!

Plates average about $10-$15 and are worth every penny.

The best food here revolves around an excellent mole sauce: thick, sharp, sweetly complex, displaying top notes of smoke and citrus.

AVIATION EXHIBIT OPENS AT THE BISHOP MUSEUM

Aloha Joe Hawaii’s demographic has allowed for it to have an amazing history and at the end of this month a long anticipated tribute to that will finally open!

The Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor’s long planned tribute to the greatness that was Pan American World Airways opens to the public with a special reception 2 to 4PM, Saturday, October 22, 2011, at Bishop Museum. This will mark the 75th anniversary of commercial airline passenger service to Hawaii!

The new exhibit unveiling and reception will host press, dignitaries, and members of the PAN AM and Museum families. The event is free to members and invited guests and will be up through winter.

The exhibit will feature artifacts and memorabilia in two modules: the 1930s and 1940s (“The Early Years”), and 1960s, (“The Jet Age”).

As you already know, First Fridays is the monthly huge block party in Downtown Honolulu that takes place on the First Friday of the month.

HALLOWBALOO NUUANU STREET FESTIVAL

After one great Halloween bash Oahu likes to move right onto the next PARTY!

Downtown Honolulu prides itself in being Oahu’s block party headquarters and for Halloween they don’t hold anything back!

On October 29 starting at 5pm and going until the moon fades, Nuuanu Street between Beretania and Nimitz, becomes the All Hallows Eve’s partygoers’ playground! Over 5 stages of performances are set up. Food trucks, street performers and live music performances line every corner.

A costume competition is held to all who sign up and prize giveaways are offered to the most creative, scariest and funniest getups. Details for the entire event have not yet been finalized. Admission is free and drink prices range depending on each vendor.

HINANO MOLOKAI HOE

Aloha Joe how far do you think you could paddle in a canoe? 2, 3 miles maybe? Well for the elite paddlers of the world the 41-mile Molokai Hoe is a walk in the park!

The Molokai Hoe is considered the world championship of men’s long-distance outrigger canoe racing. On October 9, the race begins at 7:00 am at Hale O Lono Harbor as Outrigger Canoe paddlers brave the Kaiwi Channel from Molokai to Oahu and finish at Duke Kahanamoku Beach in Waikiki.

The average time it takes to complete the distance is 9 hours. Each year over 1000+ paddlers from around the world compete in the Molokai Hoe, and this year marks the Molokai Hoe’s 59th crossing.

Talk about a workout!

2011 ALOHA FESTIVAL FLORAL PARADE

This Saturday on September 24, 2011 at 9:00am a colorful equestrian procession of female and male pau riders, extravagant floats with cascades of Hawaiian flowers, hula Halau and marching bands will brighten Kalakaua Avenue from Ala Moana Park to Kapiolani Park. This is a “must see” event!

Anyone who has seen the Aloha Festival Floral Parade will tell you that it’s nothing like anything you have ever seen before. The streets are lined with thousands of spectators staring at the gorgeous flowers. It’s amazing!

Aloha Joe one great thing about being in paradise is that you still get to enjoy the beach, ocean and great out doors ALL YEAR LONG!

On September 25^th the amazing women of the islands put it to practice at the 30^th annual NA WAHINE O KE KAI Outrigger Canoe Race.

This is it the grand finale of outrigger canoe racing for women around the world and ends the 9-month season of outrigger paddling.

From Hale O Lono Harbor on the southwestern shores of Molokai women paddlers take on the 40 mile famous Molokai channel race to Oahu, Waikiki and land right smack in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

I’m sure it’s Mai Tais for everyone after that! It is an amazing sport to witness with amazing women athletes from around the world.

HALLOWEEN

Aloha Joe I know that we are over a month away but I want to make sure I give your listeners ample time to be in paradise for the legendary HAWAII HALLOWEEN EXTRAVANGAZA!

If you have never experienced a HALLOWEEN IN HAWAII then you have never truly experienced HALLOWEEN!

POINT PANIC MUSIC FESTIVAL

On November 19, 2011 at 4:00pm at the Kaka’ako Beach Park Amphitheater the Point Panic Music Festival featuring Sublime with Rome, Pepper, Iration, & Dub Trio will have all of Oahu dancing and grooving all night long!

Pepper, a local band from the Big Island that has been climbing the charts, will be back home and ready to rock out with their adoring local fans.

This will be the second show for Sublime with Rome in Oahu and we are glad to have such a legendary and influential band return to our shores.

11^th ANNUAL JOY OF SAKE FESTIVAL

Aloha Joe, the nights are getting chilly and as you know the best remedy for the fall and winter cool weather is some delicious cocktails!

Hawaii has a very special relationship with Japanese culture and at the 11^th Annual Joy Of Sake Festival happening tomorrow at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel, spectators will get to see first hand why.

This signature event is the largest sake tasting held outside of Japan, providing Hawaii with a rare opportunity to experience the world’s finest sakes in peak condition.

The Joy of Sake is the public tasting event that follows the U.S. National Sake Appraisal. This blind tasting is sponsored by the International Sake Association and conducted by a team of 10 judges from Japan and the U.S. Judges evaluate aroma, taste, balance and overall harmony in each entry.

Sake enthusiasts will also be able to sample a terrific array of sake appetizers prepared by 15 of Hawaii’s top chefs. Tickets range from $80 to $90 and are available at www.joyofsake.com.

12TH ANNUAL KO OLINA TASTE AT KAPOLEI is going on September 10^th. Guest will enjoy an evening of food and wine under the stars at the Ko Olina Resort. The event features tasting tents from the island’s top restaurants and chefs, along with a selection of favorite wines and beer, live entertainment and a silent auction.

2ND ANNUAL RICE FEST AT MAGIC ISLAND from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, September 11. A plethora of activities is planned including cook-offs, celebrity chef cooking demonstrations, a SPAM musubi eating contest, a competition to build the Guinness World Record Spam Musubi, plus lots of rice dishes for everyone to enjoy.

The 41-mile Outrigger Canoe race from Molokai to Oahu across the Kaiwi Channel, known as the Molokai Hoe is considered the world championship of men’s long-distance outrigger canoe racing.

The takes place on October 9 and begins at 7:00 am at Hale O Lono Harbor and finishes at Duke Kahanamoku Beach in Waikiki.

It is an amazing spectacle to see and a one of a kind experience you can only get in paradise!

Aloha Joe like I said, fall and winter are the seasons for eating, drinking and being merry!

Oahu is known for our stellar bartenders, chefs and award-winning mixologists like Christina Maffei who has created the concept of liquid artistry!

Maffei is the food and beverage manager of Trump International Hotel in Waikiki, where some of OBRHI’s most luxurious suites are located.

By combining the ingredients of a liquid kitchen and the ideas of a bar chef she is able to make the most tantalizing sensations. Here is a killer recipe for you to try this fall season:

1oz Bacard 8

½ oz Disaronno Amaretto

¼ oz Domaine De Canton Ginger Liquer

½ oz roasted pineapple puree

¾ kaffir lime-orange syrup

¾ fresh lime juice

Shake and pour into highball glass. Layer with ½ oz Bacardi Select. Tope with pineapple Bacardi Gold sorbet.
