Hawaii – It Keeps us Coming Back

By, Jim Proulx and Joan Taylor

Hawaiian MusicMusic is everywhere in Hawaii.  “Somewhere over the Rainbow” sung by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole and the uplifting music of the ukuleles and the blending of voices with the traditional island songs has us coming back to Hawaii again and again.

We enjoy the sunset hula shows on Waikiki Beach, the concerts in Kapiolani Park, and the buskers along Kalakaua Avenue.  We especially enjoy the annual Ukulele picnics held every February on the hill by the ocean featuring fantastic Hawaiian music, dancers, drummers, and the food and ukulele music vendors.  Being true music lovers and Elvis fans, it was a thrill to visit the Coco Palms Hotel on Kauai and stand where Elvis filmed “Blue Hawaii” and sang the “Hawaiian Wedding Song”

Hawaii FestivalWe have tried the hula lessons, but with two left feet, our favorite activity is the ukulele lessons held by many hotels and stores.  We have learned some Hawaiian language through singing and playing in our ukulele classes, and look forward to seeing “the gang” each year.

Another musical highlight was meeting the senior Mr. Kamaka who gave us an extended personal tour of his world famous ukulele factory.  A 15-minute tour turned into a two-hour visit!!  We have now visited other factories, and we have purchased two ukuleles in Hawaii, plus two small ones for our grandchildren.  Jim has become so interested in ukuleles that he is now crafting his own.

Hawaii has created a new interest for both of us with the traditional island music and a new hobby.  It keeps us coming back.
