On the North Shore of Hawaii lies the quiet and small town of Kahuku, known for its high school football and fresh water shrimp farms. Over the years, a visit to the North Shore has become synonymous with epic surf and shrimp trucks. Everyday, hundreds of visitors flock to the now infamous lineup of Kahuku shrimp trucks for a taste of its famous Kahuku shrimp smothered in rich flavorful sauces ranging from garlic butter to spicy chili soy sauce. With prices ranging from $12-$15 and a variety of flavors to choose from, you may be wondering which shrimp truck serves up the best shrimp? Truth be told, its hard to be disappointed when devouring sweet succulent Kahuku shrimp, but allow us recommend to you our top favorites.
Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck
The original Shrimp Truck, Giovanni’s has been serving up shrimp since 1953. Today, Giovanni’s has settled down and found 2 permanent locations: one in Haleiwa Town “across the street from McDonalds,” and one in Kahuku (56-505 Kamehameha Highway). Featured in a number of food reviews and articles along with With multiple awards under its belt for both its Hot & Spicy sauce and Scampi Marinade, Giovanni’s is definitely one of the best on the island!
Romy’s Kahuku Prawns and Shrimp serves up fresh harvested prawns and shrimp in a number of delicious sauces including spicy soyu (soy sauce), sweet and spicy, garlic butter and cocktail sauce. Romy’s also serves up a couple of non shrimp items such as Sun Fish, sweet Kahuku corn and pineapple with lihing mui (a local Hawaiian favorite that has a sweet/salty/sour flavor). Open for both lunch and dinner, Romy’s is one of the first shrimp trucks you’ll encounter when driving in from the North Shore.
Fumi’s Shrimp Truck
Fumi’s shrimp is cooked fresh and prepared with a variety of sauces ranging from spicy garlic to lemon pepper, each plate comes with two scoops of rice, a side salad and a slice of Dole pineapple. Featured as one of Maxim Magazines best food spots and now located in two locations (although both are less than a minute away from each other), Fumi’s has all the quality and flavors of Giovanni’s and Romy’s with a fraction of the crowds.
The Shrimp Shack
A bit farther (or closer depending on which direction you’re driving from) than the other shrimp trucks, The Shrimp Shack is a bright yellow truck next to Kaya’s Store in Punaluu. Featured on Food Network’s “Beach Eats” and an Ilima People’s Choice Award recipient; its choice of Kauai shrimp over Kahuku shrimp and a larger menu selection ( grilled mahi mahi, snow crab and mussels to name a few) definitely sets it apart as one of our top picks.
